Parenting time

  • Parents must request any temporary changes to the parenting time schedule at least __ days in advance. When an emergency or unforeseen circumstance (such as a child's illness) makes shorter notice necessary, the parents must notify each other as soon as possible.
  • Both parents will share the parenting time schedule with their respective employers. If either parent has a work obligation during their parenting time, that parent will try to adjust their work schedule by coordinating with their employer or a coworker.
  • Each parent will be allowed to take the child to funerals, births, weddings, graduations, or events of similar significance during the other parent's parenting time, as reasonable.

Exchange location

  • The exchange location when Parent A receives the child will be __________ or, if the exchange happens at the start or end of the child's school day, at the child's school.
  • The exchange location when Parent B receives the child will be __________ or, if the exchange happens at the start or end of the child's school day, at the child's school.
  • The parents must agree in advance on any changes to exchange location.

Interaction during exchanges

  • Neither parent will display anger or use profanity or sarcasm during exchanges.
  • During exchanges, the parents must not interact. Each must remain in their car or home, or they must keep at least __ feet away from each other.
  • The parents will not allow the following person(s) to be at the exchange location during an exchange: (names go here)

Custom provisions

You can write a unique provision. Important tips:

  • The judge will order both of you to follow your parenting plan, so phrase it to describe what you (not anyone else) will be required to do.
  • Keep the focus on your child. Each provision's primary purpose should be to meet your child's needs, not to get your way.

The easiest way to make a parenting plan

Creating a parenting plan on your own can feel overwhelming. You have to address all possible situations while using airtight legal language.

Use technology to take the guesswork out of the equation. The Custody X Change app walks you through each step of creating a plan.

For provisions about parenting time and exchanges, you'll work mostly in the app's "changes to parenting time" and "exchanges" categories. They include the provisions you see above, plus many others.

The result will be a professional document that demonstrates your competence as a parent and secures your child's future.
